Crocodile Canoe Prow From the Iatmul people of the Middle Sepik River region.
The crocodile is symbolic for the Iatmul who believe they are descended from a giant
crocodile and that the world is on the back of the first crocodile. The crocodile, or puk-puk,
is the most respected clan totem. At initiation into manhood, male members of the tribe
are ritually scarified to resemble the skin of the crocodile.
