Captain Philip Carteret circumnavigated the globe from 1766-1769 aboard the HMS Swallow
and passed through Papua New Guinea (New Britain) in 1767. Rigobert Bonne was one of the
most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 Bonne became Royal
Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine.
