Yam Masks. From the Abelum people of East Sepik Province.
Yam growing forms a large part of the Abelum society. During yam growing season,
strong emotions and even sexual relations are kept to a minimum so as not to impede
the growth of the yams, fighting is taboo. Masks are used to cover long yams in
a ceremony showing off the men’s gardening prowess.
